What is it about Geeks and Sushi?

Fred-B86 writes “Need low-tech sushi after a high-tech coding session? Austin’s first full-out sushi buffet has just opened, according to www.austinsushi.com. Oishi Sushi House (located in the old Mason Jar restaurant at 6718 Middle Fiskville Road) has a 20-foot sushi buffet and a 20-foot hot food buffet. Austinsushi.com sez that the prices are $24.95 dinner and $11.95 lunch — quite a bargain if the sushi is any good at all…..”

I ate there a few nights ago. The price for dinner was 19.95. The soda drinks were from a can, so I doubt refills are free (I didn’t bother with a refill.. I asked for water after I finished the Coke[1] ) I think that was my only complaint about this place. Everything else was great. The sushi was on par for being a buffet. The pieces were smaller than you would get at a sushi bar, but with all you can eat, who cares about the size?.. They also had sashimi and rolls. None of the rolls really impressed me, they might have been a bit on the dry side. (my favorite roll in Austin is the Peony Roll at Yoshi’s sushi bar) The hot dishes were very good. They were mostly japanese and thai dishes. The steak was really good. I left feeling very stuffed.

[1] They were out of DrPepper the day I went. All they had was Coke, and Diet Coke, water and ice tea.. I didn’t ask about sake. I figured they probably hadn’t gotten thier liquor license yet.

This past weekend I happened to be hanging out with some friends, one of whom I believe had been a Papa John’s delivery dude at one point. So we got to talking about screwy city roads, and Middle Fiskville Road came up. Apparently, there are several (as in 3+) physically non-connected roads in Austin (east and west of I-35) that are all called Middle Fiskville Road. So saying that a place is on Middle Fiskville Road begs the question of “Which one?” :-) Random tangent: we ate at this place called Ken’s Tacos up in north austin. They have a really bad website at http://www.kenstaco.com/, but they have really good breakfast tacos. So if you’ve been up all night coding and need some potato/egg/sausage/cheese goodness before you sleep, they’re worth the ride.
