The Background
Last year at DrupalCamp Austin, @DavidStrauss encouraged me to organize a NoSQL Camp Austin. After sending out about 100 surveys, I decided that the local community would be better served by a series of data days -- each focusing on a specific topic or technology. I decided to launch the series with MongoDB Day.
Because Austin is home to Riptano and a growing Apache Cassandra community, I felt that the perfect followup event would be a Cassandra Day. After a few meetings with Matt Pfeil and the Riptano team, I postponed the Austin event, and opted to help Riptano organize the Cassandra Summit in San Francisco. (Slides and Videos). I'm glad I did. It was like jumping into an information wind-tunnel.
In the meantime, lots of things have been happening in Austin. Steve Watt has brought together the Austin Hadoop community with a series of monthly meetings. Since their hugely successful Data Cluster Meetup during SXSW 2010, Flip Kromer and the Infochimps team have been building a growing local community around Big Data.
While having coffee with with Matt last week, we decided that, regardless of what I felt previously, it's time for an event to bring us all together to share what we've learned so far, trade notes, and amp up the innovation.
Data Day Austin
Although we are still looking at possible dates and venues, we're putting a stake in the ground and announcing the event.
Help us organize Data Day Austin. Send us a note at dataday@geekaustin.org, letting us know:
1) What would you like to see. What would you like to walk away from the event with? What would make Data Day Austin a must attend event?
2) Are there any events you planning to attend in the next few months -- so that we won't schedule Data Day Austin at the same time.
3) Would you like to speak on a topic? If so, send us a proposal.
The event will be co-hosted by Riptano and GeekAustin. If your company would like to join us as a sponsor, send us a note at dataday@geekaustin.org.
This is gonna be fun.
