I've been a fan of JWZ since his days at Netscape. I enjoyed his gruntle stories. My favorite was how he turned his cube into the tent of doom. Jamie (JWZ) is hilariously pragmatic. He's like the Penn Jillette of software programming. So it was a real treat to read Joel Spolsky's latest column: The Duct Tape Programmer.

For Joel, Jamie is the "Duct Tape Programmer". He goes on to say:

The Role of QA in the startup environment

As quite a few of you already know, Dennis Gyor and I have been working on a GeekAustin QA Special Interest Group. Dennis, longtime GA member and QA hitman will be leading the group. The purpose of the group will be to provide an environment for local QA/testing pros to exchange knowledge, tips, tricks, leads, etc.

Our first event is scheduled for mid November. The topic for the event will be "The Role of QA in the startup environment". We'll be announcing speakers and location in the next few weeks. We've already been asked, and no, we won't be hosting the event on a football night.

GeekAustin tidbits - Java Certification Prep and Drupal Camp Austin

GeekAustin Free Class: Daniel Eastland will be leading a Java Programmer Certification prep (SCJP) group. This is for the Java 1.6 test. The group will be geared toward those who already have a working knowledge of Java and either want to take the test for the first time, or will be upgrading from the previous cert. The group will meet Wednesday nights, beginning the first week of October. For overview of certifications, visit the Sun Java Certification site. If you're interested in joining the group, send me an email at lynnbender@geekaustin.org.

DrupalCamp Austin is seeking a new venue. Because of the number of folks who've already expressed interest (150+) in DrupalCamp Austin, tentatively scheduled for October 24-25, we're looking for a bigger venue. We're looking for a place with 3 rooms for presentations, one of which would be large enough for a keynote. Needless to say, we'll need ample bandwidth as well. If you have access to such a place, or even have suggestions, please contact Lauren Roth at lauren@laurennroth.com. To keep informed on the latest news, visit the DrupalCamp Austin Facebook page. For sponsorship opportunities, send a note to Todd Ross Nienkerk.

Ken Starks on Gutsy Geeks tonight (9-10-2009)

Ken Starks, Founder of HeliOS and co-host of the first Linux Against Poverty Installfest, just informed me that he will be on the Gutsy Geeks Radio Show tonight at 8:15 CST. Ken will be speaking for about 15 minutes.

If you want the behind the scenes on how to take 200 frankenputers, and turn them in to working machines worthy of donation -- all in one afternoon -- you'll enjoy this interview. Ken is the Jedi Knight of LAP.

If you're not able to catch the show on Gutsy Geeks tonight, I'll be posting a link to the stream on the Linux Against Poverty website.
