Austin UPA - December Happy Hour Mixer

Austin UPA (a chapter of the Usability Professionals' Association) has been reinvigorated this past year and has teamed up with AustinUX to host local events for UX (and related) folks.  Our topics are varied - from celebrating World Usability Day (see pictures) to collaborating on collaboration (see the past panel description) to discussing video game usability (check out the slides).

For December, we'll be winding down 2009 in a social fashion with a happy hour mixer at Vino Vino on December 1st.

Happy hour details
Tuesday, December 1st, 6:30-8:30pm

Vino Vino (www.vinovinotx.com)
4119 Guadalupe St
Austin, TX 78751
(Google map)

Please RSVP at http://austinupa.ning.com/events/december-happy-hour. It's not completely necessary, but would be helpful - I need to give the owners a heads-up on headcount. (Note: If you haven't signed up on the Austin UPA website, then you'll need to - the link is on the upper right, and it's free.)

Twitter Data Dump: InfoChimps Puts 1B Connections Up For Sale .

I remember first meeting Info Chimps' co-founder Flip Kromer at my bookstore back in the 90s. I couldn't remember whether he was a math, physics, or CS major at the time. Seemed like he was equally comfortable in each discipline. A decade later, It's great to see the rising success of his startup.

Flip and I spoke about NoSQL Camp earlier this week. Hopefully, he'll be able to present.

Austin NoSQL Camp -- Tentatively scheduled for Feb 2010

in

Last weekend, at DrupalCamp Austin, David Strauss, Rob Ristroph and I were speaking about our shared interest in some of the newer document databases, graph databases, the emerging "schema free" movement, etc. We decided that there is too much going on for a single presentation, and that it would be a good idea to hold a NoSQL Camp (facebook group)

I ran the idea by my fellow data geek buddies and the response was "When? Let's do it!"

What is NoSQL? Check out the NoSQL Wikipedia Entry.

We are tentatively looking to hold the event in February 2010. We have a few interested sponsors, but are seeking more. If you'd like to help organize, send a note to nosql@geekaustin.org.

More SXSWi 2010 presentations announced today

The second batch of SXSW Interactive presentations have just been posted. Here's some of the one's that look interesting to me:

Mason Hale, of One Spot: AI 2010: Wall-e Or Rise Of The Machines?
I've never figured out just what it is that OneSpot does, but Mason is a terribly sharp guy. This ought to be a good presentation.

Eric Olson: Data is Money: How Geeks are Changing Finance I've been following Eric's blog for a while.

Bruce Sterling: Nothing more to say. There is a difference between watching Bruce's presentations and talking to him at a party. Skip the previous panel and show up early to get a seat.

If you missed the announcement of the first set of presentations, you can find it here. For further reference, check out the complete list of SXSWi 2010 speakers.
