The return of GeekAustin's job board

From the beginning back in 2000, until early 2007, tech job postings were a significant portion of GeekAustin. The reasons for removing the job board in 2007 are, well, a bit lengthy.

Despite the tough job market, an increasing number of friends in HR and management positions have asked me to help them identify potential new hires -- so many in fact, that I have decided to resurrect the job board. We (myself and the rest of the GA cabal) are still discussing what functionality to add. However, we do now have a page where you can view the latest posts: http://geekaustin.org/job-listings

Since GA is mostly read by tech folks, we'll only be posting tech positions.

I hope you find it useful, and welcome your suggestions.

University of Texas selects Drupal

Some pretty big news this week for my fellow Austin drupalistas.

The University of Texas has just selected Drupal as the content management system (CMS) for core pages within the www.utexas.edu directory structure. Their report states that:

Drupal was found to meet nearly all of the project’s documented high-level requirements, either through core functionality or available contributed modules. Two requirements identified early on as critical to the success of this project were configurable workflows and scalability through high-availability caching. We determined that Drupal fulfills both of these requirements using off-the-shelf free and open source modules.

The report goes on to state:

Since the Drupal project is deeply committed to the open source philosophy, there is a very large community of developers who are continually contributing new functionality back to the Drupal ecosystem either through contributed modules, or patches to the core product itself. Additionally, there are a growing number of companies offering commercial consulting, training, and support services for Drupal.

Linux Against Poverty Install Fest 2010

Although Ken Starks and I made the decision more than a month ago, Ken has been patient while I wrap up other obligations.

We have decided that there will be a Linux Against Poverty Install Fest #2 in May 2010.

For the first install fest, we set the goal of 200 computers for local children. For 2010, we're going to set the goal at 300 computers. In fact, I'm considering bumping that number to 400. With 5 months to plan and your help, I know that we can do it.

I think this bears repeating. This last August, over a hundred people donated over 200 computers. Over 50 volunteers refurbished and installed Linux on them. Those 200 computers went to local kids who one reason or another did not have ready access to a computer. That was our first go at it. I have no doubt that, now that we have the hang of it, we can do better this year.

Over the next few weeks, I'll be releasing more details on the Linux Against Poverty website -- including signup sheets for volunteers.

In the meantime, feel free to sign up for the event on Facebook at:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=184754949503

Just like the first one, this event will be co-hosted by The Helios Project.

I'm looking forward to working with everyone again.

-Lynn

BTW, If you have a computer that you'd like to donate, don't hang on to it until May. Take it to one of the Helios drop-off locations. It will make a mighty fine Christmas present for a future geek.
