The Austin Drupal Dojo

Despite the overall job situation nowadays, for a Drupal developer/designer, things look pretty good. There are way more drupal jobs and contracts than the local talent can fill. Way more.

For quite some time, I've been discussing with the other folks in the Austin Drupal community how to bring more beginners up to speed, and how to help the intermediate level folks become drupal ninjas.

While there are a tremendous amount of resources for those wanting to learn Drupal, it's important to connect and share experiences with other drupalfolk. Previously, the only regular opportunities for Drupalistas to meet up have been the monthly meetups.

This last week, myself and a few others in the community, launched the Austin Drupal Dojo. Call it a hack night or whatever, this is a weekly opportunity to get together with other folks in the Austin Drupal community. No agenda. No speakers. Bring your problems, bring your solutions, bring your laptop.

The word Dojo (道場) captures what we're trying to create -- a place to practice and master one's art. Thing of it as a place to become a Drupal blackbelt, a Drupal Ninja.

I should say that we're not the first in town to do this. Matt Buck launched the Ruby Dojo last November, and there has been a virtual Drupal Dojo at groups.drupal.org for quite some time. Although he doesn't use the word "dojo", Jim Hillhouse has been hosting the weekly Cocoa Coder meetings Conjunctured for over a year now.

If you're looking to ramp your skills up quickly, meeting weekly makes a difference.

Our first meeting last week at Mangia was a great success. So much so that we've reserved dates for the next 8 weeks. Tentatively, the dojo will be held at either Mangia (Spicewood and Mesa) or Triumph Cafe. Both venues are centrally located near Spicewood/Anderson and Mopac.

Here are the tentative dates for the upcoming dojos:

Design workshop at Texas Coworking, Monday, Feb 1

Are you a UX, IA, UI, IxD, usability, visual or other sort of designer? Come out for a design practice workshop! We'll be completing last week's design refinement practice exercise, refining brainstormed designs and critiquing their user experience and usability.

vi.to/practice-ux has the essay with the premise of these workshops.

We are DOWNTOWN this week! "Texas Coworking is located at 200 E. Sixth Street in downtown Austin. We are on the 3rd floor of the Hannig Row Building. On the sidewalk, you will see a wooden sign right above the entrance that says 'Hannig Row.' The downstairs entrance is a long lobby area with wood floors and several flat panel TVs along the wall. Walk in the door, and go to the elevator in the far right corner. We're on the 3rd floor. When you get off the elevator, hang an immediate left. "

Come a little early to get settled and get some coffee or a snack so we can start on time. I'll be there around 6:45pm to set up if you'd like to introduce yourself or discuss the meeting itself. Paper, markers and other materials will be provided.

Celebrate Unix' 40th birthday this Thursday at the Dog and Duck.

Back on the 11th, I announced that we'd be hosting a party to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Unix

I'm happy to say that this party will be co-hosted by the following local Unix/Linux groups:

Capital Area Central Texas Unix Society (CACTUS)
These guys are the oldest *nix group in town. Back in the early 90s, I used to give them a discount on O'Reilly books at Europa. These guys were the who's who of Austin's first generation of sys and network admins. I'm looking forward to seeing them again.

Austin Linux Enthusiasts
This group started out as the Goodwill Linux User Group. After losing the meeting space at the old Goodwill Computer store, they changed the name. When I started buying servers to build my home lab, Les Nemeth and the ALE guys were a tremendous help teaching me about system and configuration. If you need help, this is a tremendously friendly group.

League of Professional System Adminstrators -- Austin Chapter.
If you want to learn about standards and best practices for system and network administration, LOPSA is a good place to start. A real sharp helpful bunch of guys this is. They have the jobs you want. Meet the group and find out how they got them.

It looks like we may have rain tomorrow, but there is plenty of parking at the Dog and Duck. Plenty of space inside, the patio is covered, and they have a great selection of beer.

Hope you can make it!

Silona Bonewald on LoTV and Codeathons

Although I've known Silona for (mumble) years, I have never gotten around to doing a proper interview with her for GeekAustin. A few months back, I heard her interview with Phil Windley on Technometria. Days later, I heard her interview with Jon Udell on Interviews with Innovators, and I thought: " I gotta get in on this action." So I grabbed my field recorder (courtesy of the folks at SmartBear), called Silona, and said: "Let's meet at Medici."

Who is Martin Fowler?

The event has been rescheduled for Feb 25. Sign up here:
http://connect.thoughtworks.com/TechnologyForumAustin/

Martin Fowler (@martinfowler) is the Chief Scientist at ThoughtWorks, a systems integration and consulting company. He is a member of the Agile Alliance and helped create the Manifesto for Agile Software Development.

I found out that Martin was speaking in town, and signed up immediately to attend. Why?

When I first started studying UML as part of object-oriented programming, one of the two books I used was UML Distilled by Martin Fowler. When trying to get my hands around several large integration projects at Data Junction (RIP), I kept of copy of Martin's Patterns of Enterprise Architecture by the sofa. On my bookshelves, you'll also find Martin's book on Refactoring. Martin was Kent Beck's co-author on Planning Extreme Programming. I am continually referring friends to a chapter that he contributed to Enterprise Integration Patterns.

That's why I'm going, but why should you go?

Martin is a big picture guy. Many of the concepts in software methodogy that people are studying now, years ago Martin was helping to formulate. It might be a good idea to take note of what he's talking about now.

Update on NoSQLCamp Austin

Back in November, I wrote about our intent to host NoSQLCamp Austin.

Our goal was simple -- to help bring fellow Austinites up to speed on some of the latest currents in data and databases.

There have already been numerous summits and conferences on NoSQL topics: no:sql(east), OpenSQLCamp in Portland, and numerous NoSQL meetups. A quick glance at the nosql-discussion google group will show similar events occuring around the world.

So that I could get a better idea of what everyone wanted out of such an event, I sent out a survey to 90 people who had expressed interest in attending (Thanks to those of you who replied). What I discovered was that most were just getting their feet wet and were looking for an opportunity to learn more. To have a useful event, I would need to bring a lot of speakers/presenters in from around the country.

From the responses, I also got the sense that the potential attendees would not be too well served by an event where they spent an hour hearing about graph databases, followed by an hour on memcache, followed by an hour on document databases, etc. I come to think that a one or two day camp where we try to cover everything is not the best format.

Instead, I believe the best way to help propogate all the new ideas is by a series of Database Dev Days. For example, we host a Drizzle Dev Day. Brian Aker has been the main force behind Drizzle (wikipedia), and I've been looking for a good excuse to bring him back to town. I know that the folks at 10gen Confluence would love to come to town to talk about MongoDB (wikipedia). Rather than give them a two hour slot in a whirlwind event, why not simply have a MongoDB day?

Thanks to everyone for all the emails. Instead, why not post your thoughts in the comments here, so everyone else can see. Let me know what you think.

-Lynn
