Geek Meets Grid at Union Park was a blast.

As many of you know, because we have some new things coming up, the 8th Anniversary Bash was to be our last party for a while. I want to give a special thanks to RefreshAustin and the Austin Electronic Music Grid for co-hosting the party. Extra special thanks to Michelle Greer for introducing me to Union Park. This club keeps getting better and better.

Tech Diva Kimberlie Dykeman and Paul Walhus were doing interviews on the roof in between musical acts. Among the folks interviewed were Michael Witbrock of Cycorp (interview), Chris Lamprecht, Lead Architect of Indeed.com (interview), and Mauricio PiƱa of tseg.com (interview)

De facto chronicler of Austin tech events, Eugene Hsu, dropped by to photograph the party. You can see his photo sets on facebook (photo set 1, photo set 2). I have been hosting parties for about 17 years now, and I have to tell you Eugene is one of the best. The Austin tech scene is fortunate to have this guy shooting the parties. When you see him, buy him a drink.

Kristen Sobieray, April Kyle, Eugene Hsu

Erica O’Grady, Michelle Greer, and Sara Dornsife are here. Now the party can get started!

One of my favorite parts of the party was the music provided by the artists of the Austin Electronic Music Grid. At several points later in the evening, we had 3 different artists in three different rooms. (I hope you knew that the party was going on in 4 spaces.) Dubnautica started at 7:30 in the BoomBoom Room Refresh Lounge.

At 8:30, Carbon Theory played in the main room.

At 10:00, Happy Panjoma did a great set on the roof, followed by Rage Ranger.

I hope to do more things with the Grid in the future. These are really a great bunch of folks.

How many of you new about the new bed on the back upstairs patio? What a perfect place to cap off the evening!

After a few last glances at the skyline from the Union Park patio, it’s time to go home. Thanks to everyone for a great party.

Looking for an working, clean Apple IIe

Vito writes: Maybe I just don’t know where to look, but I’ve been utterly unable to find a working, clean Apple IIe in town. Goodwill Computerworks doesn’t have any. Craigslist hasn’t had any for as long as I’ve been looking. eBay is getting increasingly expensive, particularly when you factor in shipping.

I’m looking for one to buy to install a rare SwyftCard (Jef Raskin, Canon Cat, etc.) into as part of a class project at UT, if that makes any difference for anyone. I already have the SwyftCard, just need the Apple.

Anyone have one they’re looking to get rid of? Or know where to look for one? Ideally it’d be a platinum (the one with the extended keyboard), have at least one floppy drive and a serial card. 80 column card, speech synth, additional RAM, printer or monitor optional, but I’d be interested in any of them. IBM cuts 100 jobs in Austin

csimoes writes: “Looks like IBM is cutting Austin jobs again. Yet everyone I talk to says the Austin job market is going great. I guess this should make it easier for these people to find jobs. What do you think, is the Austin job market much improved from 1 or 2 years ago?”

CTLUG is hosting a Linux book study

davidday writes: The first topic is LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP).

I’m using O’Reilly “Web Database Application with PHP and MySQL”, 2nd
Edition, ISBN: 0596000413, but lets see which (if any) text the group
prefers when we meet.

Meetings are at KPI Consulting (2900 Jazz St, Round Rock) each Saturday at noon.

First meeting is 9/24/06. Duration is based on pace and scope
established by the group. Some have suggested adding Ruby on Rails, and if we do this will extend the length.

Legal stuff:
You don’t have to: be affiliated with CTLUG, pay fees, attend all
meetings, already be an expert. And noobs are encouraged to attend (I
don’t want to be the only one).”

Dorkbot!!

When I growing up in Detroit, there was this store called Allied Radio. It was about the twice the size of a Walgreen’s store, and it was all electronics gear. They had aisles of resistors, capacitors, TTL (and later, CMOS) chips, vacuum tubes, Heathkit parts, soldering irons, oscilliscopes, and a bunch of other stuff for which I didn’t yet know the name. On Saturdays, I would ride my bike there, with a fresh schematic from Popular Electronics magazine, and make whatever the thing of the month was. Sometimes I was successful, sometimes I wasn’t. I remember blowing the fuse to the basement multiple times, blowing out perfectly working electronic devices, and even starting a small fire in a radio that my father gave me for Christmas. I sure did have a lot of fun. In the process, I learned about all sorts of nifty things like impedance, which came in handy when I was trying to tweak the reverb and preamp circuits on my guitar amp — or when I lived in the Ambassador and was trying to figure out how to bridge my neighbor’s circuit to get more amperage.

In the mid seventies,I bought a Yamaha mixing console. When it broke, I discovered that the whole mixer was on a single IC chip. Nothing to fix. You take it to the Yamaha repair shop, and the replace the chip. I began to notice that more and more of the objects I bought were built the same way. It breaks, you throw it away. The opportunities to take something apart, learn how it worked, fix it, or maybe just make it better were becoming less frequent.

When I first saw Make magazine, I knew something was afoot. If you can’t open it, you don’t own it. Yeah, that’s exactly what I felt.

With the emergance of the first Dorkbot events, it’s appears that this philosphy is becoming a movement. I couldn’t be happier. For those of you in Austin, we have some of the biggest dorkbot events right here.
The next one is Saturday, March 10th. If you’re downtown (and you should be), and need a break from Barcamp, you’ve got to check out the Dorkbot event in Brush Park.
